Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui Story
Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is a light-hearted portrayal of a serious subject; And the film gets closer to its characters and plots in exactly the same way. The person in question is a gym owner named Manvinder Munjal alias Manu (Ayushmann Khurrana). There are many strange things surrounding Manu - like his twin retainers Rizz and Jomo, who are his biggest cheerleaders, and his widowed father, who has finally found love again at the age of 55. (I was especially tickled by the strange way this particular situation — an inter-religious, no less — was treated in the film, the way it was in the background.)

Meanwhile, Manu's two sisters, playing the role of mothers (consolidated plural) in their lives, are desperately trying to 'settle down' them, keeping their own best interests in mind. One fine day, a Zumba instructor comes into her life. The attraction is immediate and mutual. Sparks fly, songs are played. Now we come to the 'bottleneck'.
Manu Munjal, on the other hand, is a manly Punjabi munda whose only focus in life so far has been the unfulfilled quest to win a local competition for the strong, heavy Gabru. For a guy like him, exploring this aspect of Maanvi's life is a huge leap. And therein lies the struggle. If you look at the details of the conflict, the rest of the film follows the same path we expect from most Bollywood love stories. Fortunately, the film's simplicity doesn't hinder the effect it could potentially have.
Mainstream Hindi cinema has rarely centered stories around trans characters, and trans identities in general are not always treated with respect in our films. Therefore, having only one transgender character as half of the lead pair in a Bollywood romance is in itself worthy of praise. But Kapoor and his writing team Supratik Sen and Tushar Paranjpe don't stop here.
More importantly, the film spends a lot of time making us understand that what Maanvi has done, struggles to carve a niche for herself (and still does), is the person she is within. Admittedly, the upper middle class comes with human socio-economic privileges which many more people in our country do not have. But it is too much to expect discourse on intersectionality in a film that has already pushed a certain threshold. Whatever it is engrossing, it is portrayed with a nuance that I didn't expect.
There are many aspects to the film that should be discussed and debated. For example, casting an explicitly actor to play a transgender character. Or where the line of humor lies within the context of the film, and how often does the film cross that line or not. Expectedly, derogatory words and euphemisms about misunderstood aspects about trans people are the first reactions to the mystery of the human. But, in the hierarchy of the film's characters, starting with Manu going downhill, clearly enough people learn and grow over the course of the film. Personally, I hope the film evokes critical reactions and writes about these aspects, especially from transgender voices.
Nonetheless, what Kapoor and team have done deserves appreciation. While Ayushmann is as capable as ever, this film gives us the most important role of Vaani Kapoor till date. As an actor, she is a product of a system that has relied heavily on encouraging unrealistic beauty and body standards (especially for women) while discouraging individuality or quirkiness.
Here, he has introduced exactly that. But by the end of it, she does enough to bring life to Maanvi Brar and her struggles. It is supported only by the entire ecosystem of characters dedicated to him. Some are helpful, others are not. And, importantly, this part of the film is more dramatic than comedic. Comic relief comes from Manu Munjal's side - his friends and family. They are the ones who have the gap of understanding to bridge. Humor is the medium, but at the end of the day his heart is in the right place.
What you get is an emotional yet cheerful two-hour film that somehow captures something important through its good nature. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is one such film that I find myself contained against all odds. In addition to commercial success, hopefully this can help push the needle of empathy a notch or two.
Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui Film Earns 8.62cr
Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui remains in controversy, which has seen an edge on Saturday. A few weeks back when Antim - The Final Truth and Tadap opened in the same segment of 4-5 crores, there was an increase but not to the extent that the Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor starrer managed. It has increased from 3.75 crores to 4.87 crores and though it is coming from a relatively low range, the positive is that the film is not flat.
As of now, the film is 8.62 crores and will surely cross 14 crores by the weekend, if it crosses the 15 crore mark then the game will continue. This will indicate solid growth and from there the weekdays can also be expected to remain stable.
